Every campus has a strategic objective to elevate the student experience on campus. But what exactly does the built environment have to do with realizing this goal? Spoiler alert: A LOT. DLR Group had the pleasure of attending APPA - Leadership in Educational Facilities spring conference in #Nashville, where I got to share our research with Shawn Gaither, AIA,LEED AP on the role of student wellbeing in campus facilities, and stories across the US to creatively solve the needs for #nextgen students. Sharing takeaways from a higher education student survey that found how stress is impacting our young people. As we drive into these findings, here are the key takeaways:1. The mental health challenge is here to stay. Half of students rate their mental health as fair or poor.2. We need agile solutions. Half of students with mental health conditions aren't accessing support services. Let's question why and work to destigmatize seeking help.3. Break down barriers. Our healthcare system is overloaded, on and off campuses. Appointment availability is a crucial barrier for people accessing care.4. Prioritize crisis response. Only 2/3 of students know where to turn during a mental health crisis. It's vital to prioritize #suicideprevention resources.5. Role of the community. Half of students believe professors play a role in mental health support. Let's recognize the significance we all play in helping each other.For #WorkplaceDesign: Get ready to create more responsive workspaces as we address the ongoing mental health challenges faced by our young people. For #K12Design: Let's equip young adults with better tools and environments to support their mental health and well-being. Alignment with the #CapitalPlan to meet student needs is vital for the success and health of everyone involved.
