NEWS OF THE RAILROADS
Assistant Conductors.
Commencing May 1 the Southern
Pacific will add an assistant conduc-
tor to nil passenger trains between
San Antonio and New Orleans. The
duties of the assistant will be to take
up tickets. This action was taken by
the company on account of the heavy
passenger traffic between this city and
the Crescent City. The local officials
say however that the extra man will
be pulled off as soon as the rush is
over.
Intel continental Railroad.
New York. April 18. —Charles M.

Inenos Ayres which he will make
ii adotiarters tor some time making
rips thence into Brazil and the At-
antic states. He will shape his re-
urn trip through Bolivia Peru and
.’olumlda reaching the last named

ercst is manifested in the railroad in-
erests in Mr. Pepper’s mission.
Union of Railway Clerks.
Chicago ill. April 18. —If plans for-
mulated at a conference held at the
Briggs house today go through the re-
sult will be the permanent organiza-
tion of a national union of railway
clerks. The organization of the
clerks will leave n<> branch of railroad

ment has been under way for some
time and the new union will be
affiliated with the American Federa-
tion of Labor.
Heavy Immigration to the West.
Chicago Ill. April 1§— Western
passenger traffic officials confidently
predict that this season's immigra
tion to the west will far surpass that
of any former year Thus far this
spring the movement to the southwest
and northwest through this city has
been unprecedented!) large and it is
increasing as the weather grows
warmer. It is estimated that more
than 15000 homeseekers have passed
through Chicago thus far this month
on their way to various sections of
the west. The movement to the at-
tractive sections of the British North-
west is reported also as being heavier
•his year thah ever before.

THE SHAMROCK ACCIDENT.
Calls Forth Sympathy and Criticism
From British Prost.
London April 18. —All the daily P*-
pens express in editorials this morn-
ing their regret at the misfortune
which pursues Sir Thomas Lipton’s
courageous attempts to lift the Amer-
ica’s cup. Several papers for the first
time admit that high hopes were en-
tertained of his success and trust that
the inevitable delay will not spoil
Sbannck s lil.’s chances. The Stand-
ard thinks that a further explanation
of the accident is needed. It remarks
that the last time it was a bolt tnat
yielded now it is a screw that snapped.
’’We do not hear that these breakages
occur in the American boats." The
Standard fears that Sir Thomas Lip-
ton's chances at no time very good
now are less than ever.
Another paper asks why there were
no life buoys aboard to throw to the
seaman. Collier who was drowned.
The Field publishes an exhaustive
analysis of the America’s cup chal-
lenger. Assuming that Shamrock I.
is in the same trim as in 1901. the
paper considers that Shamrock III.
could allow Shamrock I. about fifteen
to eighteen seconds per mile. If she
can carry her sail continues the Field
the challenger is likely to prove a
slippery customer. Should she fail
in the cup races it will probably be
because Heereshoff has made some
great advance in the speed of his new
boat on a reach. It would not be
easy to design a more weatherly boat
than the challenger and in theory it
should not be impossible to design a
considerable faster boat for reaching
or running. Thus if the Reliance
proved to be an enlarged Sakantula or
Marjory the chances are that she will
show such astonishing speed that the
valuable weatherly qualities of the
finer type possessed by Shamrock III.
or Columbia would be greatly dis-
counted. Previous attempts concludes
the Field to construct enlarged Sa-
kantulas. however have been attended
with very little success.
